There are lots of great bike rides in and around Barcelona. The Catalonian landscape is very diverse, the Mediterranean is always around the corner and the climate is usually very mild. A good example of a leisurely and unusual ride is the: “Vias Verdes” – “Green Ways” tour. Vias Verdes are former railway lines transformed into tracks for cyclists and hikers. Cycling along these tracks is extremely pleasurable and brings you into close contact with the countryside and its inhabitants.

Barcelona Province
Montserrat – Garraf:
You cycle from one mountain chain to another: Located in the bizarre Montserrat mountain lies Catalonias spiritual centre and in the Garraf Mountain you'll find yourself back to Mediterranean vegetation. In between you will discover Penedès, the biggest wine producing region in Catalonia with its own champagne production (can be visited).

Great trails for mountain bikers through this Natural Park, very close to Barcelona.
Girona Province
Girona province is situated in the North East of Catalonia nearly 100km north of Barcelona. This is an area of great geographical diversity with coastal planes, rolling farmland of l'Empordà and mountainous areas of the Pyrenees, Gavarres, Guilleries. This is an area of Spain, ideally suited for recreational activities, such as walking, cycling, mountainbike and roadbike holidays. From a cultural point of view there are many interesting elements, such as listed medieval buildings, art and culture. The medieval art, its Romanesque architecture and the artist Salvador Dalí are well known throughout the world.
Ruta del Hierro “Iron Route“. Ripoll – Olot (40km)
The first 13km to Sant Joan de les Abadesses are on a "Via Verde“ and bring us to an old mining centre in the Pyrenees foothills. Afterwards we travel on into the "Switzerland" of Spain – the lush and green volcanic landscape of the Garrotxa with great bike trails to continue your adventure.

From the Pyrenees foothills to the urban great historical town Girona, passing through some lovely valleys.
Via Verde “El Carrilet“. Girona – Sant Feliu de Guixols (40km)
The extension of the "Green way" to the Mediterranean with a well deserved swim in the sea upon arrival.
These three routes are ideal on a combined four to six day bike tour including accommodation, luggage transfer, bike hire and documentation.
The vineyards and the olive yards of l'Empordą (average km/day: 44km)
This week's itinerary covers the Empordá, passing by its most typical sceneries of coast and interior, and especially dedicated to the culture of the vineyards and the olive trees. In Baix Empordá we visit small areas dedicated to the vineyard, with artisan wine vaults, as well as a fantastic installation with wines from all over the world. We also visit the rice-field area of Pals and the rice-mill. In the plain of Alt Empordá a modern agricultural development of olive trees is visited with very modern olive oil production. The last two days the scenery changes completely, crossing the relieved zone at the foot of the massif of the Alberes, where you find the traditional culture of the vineyard and the olive trees, with a great number of agrarian co-operatives where they elaborate the wines of Denomination of origin Empord&aactue;-Costa-Brava and a traditional oil mill. In Vilajuiga a modern agrarian development is visited with elaboration of wines of recognized prestige.
